The last vestiges of the American presence in Afghanistan departed the Kabul airport on Monday 30 August 2011, the last American military plane departed Afghanistan, ending the Afghanistan war (2001-2021). According to the Costs of War project at Brown University, the war killed 171,000 to 174,000 people in Afghanistan; 51,613 civilians, 66,000 to 69,000 military and police and at least 51,000 Taliban fighters.
