Thousands of transgender women exempted themselves from military service in Thailand after being forced to attend recruitment events for the nation’s military despite not identifying as men.
Thailand requires that all men 21 years of age and older enlist in the military for a period of two years, before being drafted at random.
Transgender women, who still have male birth certificates, are legally required to attend events to display medical certificates proving their new gender, exempting them from service, as trans women are not allowed in the Thai military.
