The House of Representatives of the US Congress on Wednesday rejected the draft resolution promoted by Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz to withdraw US troops from Syria. The document was supported by 103 congressmen, including 56 Democrats and 47 Republicans, while 321 voted against it.
“There is no role for the US in Syria. We are not a Middle Eastern power. We have tried to build a democracy out of sand, blood and Arab militias. Time and time again, the work we do does not reduce the chaos. Often , causes chaos, the same chaos that later leads to terrorism. Although today’s vote may have failed, my fight to end eternal wars and bring our troops home has only begun,” Gaetz said.
Gaetz’s project, introduced in February, involves the withdrawal of some 900 US soldiers from Syrian territory over 6 months. “Congress has never authorized the use of military force in Syria,” the congressman said. “The US is not at war with or against Syria, so why are we conducting dangerous military operations there? President [Joe] Biden has to withdraw all US military forces from Syria,” he continued.
Gaetz added that the US had done everything necessary for the Islamic State terrorists to gain strength in Syria and Iraq. “We give these so-called ‘moderate rebels’ weapons, which I really took as an oxymoron, and it turns out they’re not that moderate,” he explained.
