It was especially turbulent in Iraq on 05/26/2021. In the afternoon, the police arrested Qassem Muslikh, commander of the 13th Hashd Shaabi Brigade and chief of operations in Anbar province.
It’s not known for sure the reason: some sources report that allegations of involvement in the murders of two anti-government activists in 2019 were the reason. According to another version, Muslikh is suspected of organizing the bombing of the US “Green Zone” in the Iraqi capital.
Hashd Shaabi reacted immediately: columns of gantraks were sent to Baghdad for a demonstration, and the leaders of the pro-Iranian organization demanded the immediate release of a high-ranking commander. As for what happened, the contradictory information goes further: some claim Muslikh’s release, others that he is still in custody.
In any case, a tense situation remains in Baghdad.
In the streets of Baghdad armored vehicles of the Iraqi army were also seen, which were brought into the city to avoid possible armed clashes between the Hashd Shaabi and the police and the Counter-Terrorism Office.
