The provincial spokesperson, Omar Zowak said that following a blast, heavy clashes broke out between Afghan forces and the Taliban insurgents, which could have raised more casualties.
Taliban claimed large attack against military base (Kandak) in Sangin district of Helmand this morning, starting with a tactical explosion followed by ground assault, claiming to have killed 26 soldiers and wounding others, destroying one APC & seizing weapons/ammo.
The Taliban dug a tunnel into the base in volatile Sangin district and then blew it up before their fighters could attack the compound, Nawab Zadran a spokesperson for 215 Maiwand Army Corps in southern Afghanistan told AFP.
Provincial spokesperson Omar Zawak also confirmed the Helmand base attack and said the soldiers were killed by the powerful blast inside the base.
