Six armed generals of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) were arrested as part of a corruption investigation involving former President Pedro Castillo, who was dismissed on December 7.
Through a press release, the Peruvian Ministry of the Interior reported on the mega-operation in which three arms generals, an active brigadier non-commissioned officer, a retired officer and a civilian were arrested.
According to the investigation led by the Special Team against Power Corruption and by prosecutor Marita Barreto, the detainees would be “immersed in the alleged delivery of money to irregularly rise in rank in 2021, a situation that would have had the authorization of the former president Pedro Castillo”.
In addition to the arrests, the search and search of 27 properties was also carried out in the regions of Lima, Tumbes, Piura, Cusco, Lambayeque, Ucayali, Áncash, Tacna and in the province of Callao, of which two that are related stand out. with PNP General Max García Esquivel, who in August was sentenced to 15 months in pretrial detention for the crime of bribery.
Likewise, properties corresponding to former Commander General Javier Gallardo Mendoza and Rodolfo Villanueva Nole, whose whereabouts are unknown, were searched, and two properties belonging to former Defense Minister Walter Ayala were searched.
These arrests occur the same day that the General Directorate of Interior Government of Peru informed about the dismissal of 312 sub-prefects in districts of 23 regions of the country, who allegedly had fueled the demonstrations against President Dina Boluarte and in support of Pedro Castillo.
