Seoul asks Pyongyang to refrain from escalating tensions on the peninsula after recent statements by Kim Jong-un’s sister
The South Korean government urged North Korea on Monday to refrain from escalating tensions in the region and return to the path of dialogue, after the latest statements by Kim Yo-jong, the deputy director of the department of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party and sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, reports Yonhap.
During a press conference, the spokesperson for the South Korean Ministry of Unification, Lee Jong-joo, said that the Ministry “clearly indicates that North Korea should not in any way provoke additional tensions on the Korean peninsula.”
Kim Yo-jong recently threatened serious consequences for bilateral relations and recalled that Pyongyang is a “state with nuclear weapons”; statements in response to the warning of South Korean Defense Minister Suh Wook, who stated that Seoul has the necessary capabilities to carry out a “preemptive strike” with precision weapons against the neighboring country.
