Chernobyl zone exclusive – Izvestia correspondent Leonid Kitrar
“During the entire duration of the operation, not a single shot was fired”
On February 24, 2022, units of the Airborne Forces of the Russian Federation took the Chernobyl nuclear power plant under protection.
An agreement was reached with the military of a separate NPP security battalion of the Ukrainian National Guard to jointly ensure the security of the power units, the sarcophagus and the storage of spent nuclear fuel.
Taking control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was one of the most important tasks for Russian troops, especially after Volodymyr Zelensky’s announcement that Ukraine wants to obtain nuclear weapons. Kiev could have assembled a “dirty bomb” from Chernobyl nuclear waste.
Station personnel continue to monitor the radioactive situation and maintain the facilities in normal mode. The Russian and Ukrainian military, which ensure the safety of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, guarantee that the nationalists will not be able to carry out any sabotage
