One of the most powerful drug traffickers in the world detained in Colombia
One of the most powerful drug traffickers in the world, Wilder Sánchez ‘Cat’ Farfán, was arrested this Thursday, February 9 in Colombia in a massive joint operation between the Ecuadorian-Colombian police, the DEA and Interpol.
Farfán is one of the most wanted drug lords in the world and had been placed on the most wanted list by US authorities, who claimed that he had shipped cocaine produced in Colombia to Ecuador, from where the drug moved through Central America, Mexico and then to the United States.
‘Cat’ allegedly became one of the main cocaine suppliers for the Sinaloa and Jalisca Nueva Generación cartels. After his arrest, he was transferred to the Colombian capital, Bogotá, where the issue of his extradition to the United States will be decided.
Who is ‘Cat’?
In seven years, Sánchez Farfán, alias ‘Cat’, went from being the right hand of Telmo Castro to one of the most important drug traffickers in the world, according to the United States Government. Now, alias ‘Gato’ became one of the main cocaine suppliers of the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel, both Mexican.
And according to the police commander, Fausto Salinas, alias “Cat” has become the ringleader of the so-called “Ecuador New Generation Cartel.” This organization brings together bands such as Los Lobos and Los Tiguerones.
The Ecuadorian Police already arrested Sánchez Farfán in 2013. He received a four-year prison sentence. But in 2018 he was released from prison thanks to the benefit of pre-release. Since then there were no traces of the Ecuadorian drug trafficker, until this Thursday. In addition, in 2022, the Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned the Ecuadorian and pointed him out for his links with Mexican cartels.
