Islamic State militants capture most of the city of Monguno, located in northeast Nigeria
The militants attacked the city from two sides, advancing under mortars from enemy positions, after which fierce battles took place in the city, during some 23 fighters from government forces, including militias, were killed. In addition, the militants destroyed 5 tanks and several units of armored vehicles, also captured 3 vehicles along with various types of weapons and ammunition.
In general, Islamic State militants managed to expel government forces from a large part of the city and advance towards the center, burning 2 barracks and 3 checkpoints, as well as freeing prisoners and subsequently destroying police station. In the end, Islamic State militants handed out leaflets explaining the purpose of their fight to local residents and left the city, but lost several of their fighters and around 4 vehicles.
