An Ecuadorian Army helicopter crashed on the afternoon of this Saturday, March 12, 2022, in one of the main avenues of Portoviejo. For reasons not yet established, the aircraft crashed on Avenida Universitaria at 4:00 p.m., leaving no fatalities.
The incident occurred a few meters from the pedestrian crossing for the entrance to the Technical University of Manabí. Videos on social networks showed how the Gazelle-type helicopter lost height until it hit the pavement.
The Army explained that the crew was returning from carrying out military operations on the southern border, from Machala. Three people were transported: pilot, co-pilot and air mechanic.
Close to landing at the Army Aviation Group base, a mishap forced the pilots to take quick action to avoid a more serious accident. The unexpected landing occurred in the middle of the highway.
