The conformation of drug cartels in the United States (USA), was recognized this week by the Administration for Drug Control (DEA), Latin Press review.
This was stated by Polo Ruiz, an officer in charge of DEA office in Tucson, Arizona, who said that these criminal groups are not extensions of Mexican or Colombian gangs, but organizations formed and run by Americans, which have been operating for four or five years.
“Many of these organizations built their businesses in the northern part of the country and have people in the southern part, which borders Mexico, to operate, put them in charge of transport and other aspects of logistics,” said Ruiz.
It is the first time that a senior DEA official acknowledges that drug cartels integrated and directed by his nationals operate in his country; his declarations break with the speech that Washington handles since in 1973 Richard Nixon created the Drug Administration and declared war against a business supposedly operated only by foreign criminals.
“Every day, 137 people die of drug overdoses (mostly synthetic),” Ruiz tells Proces during an interview at the DEA office in the Nogales district of Arizona, a few meters from the border with Mexico.
“The consumption of fentanyl is the main cause of overdose deaths. We face the demand for synthetic drugs very strongly, so we have initiatives that focus on domestic cartels, ”he adds.
