A group made up of 50 ex-soldiers from the Colombian Army began this week the process to join the Foreign Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine, according to El Espectador.
This is an elite group of foreign military called by the president of Ukraine, Zelensky, who made the call on February 27.
“All those who want to join the defense of security in Europe and the world can come and stand by the side of the Ukrainians against the invaders of the 21st century,” Zelensky said.
This Friday 03/04/2022 the information was confirmed by a diplomatic official.
“We are looking for professionals from all over the world, we created the International Legion that is made up of foreign fighters who have combat experience.”
He explained that they are verifying that these people do not have a criminal record and that they are no older than 60 years.
“They must go to Poland or to any country close to Ukraine, they must pay for their ticket and then we will give them weapons and a monthly remuneration. The important thing is that they know about combat and have their passport up to date,” said the diplomat.
Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba has also echoed this information. Through his Twitter account he called on foreigners to join the army.
“Foreigners willing to defend Ukraine and the world order as part of the International Legion for the Territorial Defense of Ukraine, I invite you to contact the foreign diplomatic missions of Ukraine in your respective countries. Together we defeated Hitler and we will also defeat Putin,” said the head of Ukrainian diplomacy.
The road to Ukraine
As revealed by El Espectador, there are already 50 Colombian ex-soldiers ready to go for Poland.
It also revealed the testimony of a Colombian ex-military man, Camilo Sánchez, who plans to enlist in the Army. In the interview with the Colombian media, he stated that they are already in contact with a Ukrainian military officer to start the process.
«They asked us for documents that prove that we do not have a criminal record or ongoing disciplinary proceedings. In addition, they asked us to certify our military experience in combat and a resume specifying our knowledge in the field.
Once he verified that documentation, they summoned us to an interview. God willing, in ten days we will be joining the legion in Ukraine », he refers.
The Russian Ministry of Defense warned Thursday that foreign mercenaries in Ukraine who sabotage and assault Russian military and supply vehicles, and aviation with the weapons that the West supplies to Kiev, “are not combatants according to international humanitarian law” and “have no right to prisoner of war status” established in Title II of the Geneva Convention, signed in 1949. And it is that on February 27, Zelensky invited foreigners to form the “international legion” against Russia.
Likewise, Russian authorities warned of a large-scale agitation campaign promoted by United States (US) military intelligence to recruit mercenaries for the purpose of sending them to Ukraine.
