After recently finding herself in the eye of a hurricane of criticism in the media and social networks, Christine Lambrecht, German Defense Minister, said in a statement that she had sent her request for resignation to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
“Months with me in the spotlight of the media” have undermined an objective debate on Germany’s military and security policy, says the minister. The valuable work of the soldiers and many people in her portfolio is what should be in the spotlight, she insists.
The announcement comes after several days of speculation in the German media about the possibility of Lambrecht leaving the government.
Social Democrat (SPD) interior minister of the state of Lower Saxony Boris Pistorius is to serve as Germany’s next defence minister, a party source told Reuters on Tuesday.
