China’s Defense Ministry protested the passage of the US destroyer John Finn through the Taiwan Strait, accusing Washington of destabilizing the region.
“The action of the US vessel sends the wrong signal, deliberately obstructs and destabilizes the regional situation, undermines peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. We express an energetic protest,” declared the Eastern Military District.
The Arleigh Burke-class missile destroyer USS John Finn (DDG-113) carried out a “routine transit” through the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday, reaffirming “the United States’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” according to the Seventh Fleet. The entity published some photos and videos showing an MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter taking off and landing on the destroyer’s deck during transit through the strait.
On March 7, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed that “the principle of ‘one China’ is the political basis of Sino-US relations.” “It is the red line that must not be exceeded. The Chinese government doesn’t have a margin for compromises and concessions when it comes to the Tawan issue,” he said.
Official relations between Beijing and Taipei were suspended in 1949, after the forces of the Chinese nationalist Kuomintang party, led by Chiang Kai-shek, suffered a defeat in the civil war against the Communist Party of China and moved to Taiwan.
