An explosive device caused the death of at least eight policemen in the governorate of Kirkuk, in northern Iraq, reported the Kurdish television channel ‘Rudaw’, citing a source from the local security services.
The bomb exploded past a police convoy near the village of Safra, Hawija district, southwest of Kirkuk.
“After the bomb went off, a fight broke out between federal police and IS fighters,” the source said, referring to the Islamic State terrorist group.
An IS militant died in the confrontation with the agents.
