Afghan soldiers defecting to the Taliban
The recent successes of the Taliban are not just military: the movement knows how to work with the population.
Recently, according to tribal elders, the militants have released most of the captured Afghan soldiers. Of those sent to civilian life, they only accepted a promise not to work for the security forces and not to fight the Taliban.
And most will do just that. After all, the Taliban know how to successfully use the image of “fighters against occupiers and collaborators.” The goodwill gestures for the prisoners contain the following message: this is not your war, you have nothing to die for, go home.
Most of the Afghan military are not really willing to fight for the unpopular authorities in Kabul, known only for corruption and connections with foreigners. People go to the military more frequently simply because it is one of the few opportunities to earn money in poverty-stricken Afghanistan.
And it would be good if yesterday’s captives went home and didn’t join the Taliban. What happens is not so strange.
