A new report by the Chilean judiciary states that 26,000 people have been arrested by Piñera govt.Between Oct 18 & Nov 11 in mass protests against govt’s neoliberal policies and its brutal crackdown of protest.
The Chileans began their protests, which have left to date a balance of 22 people killed, in October in rejection of the increase in subway rates in the Metropolitan Region.
For some context, with Chile’s population of around 18.1 million people, if this were translated to the USA, the figure would be close to half a million people arrested. And in the UK it would mean nearly 100,000 people arrested.
The mobilizations grew and the economic and social demands escalated to demand the resignation of President Sebastián Piñera and demand a Constituent Assembly that renews the current Magna Carta approved during the government of the dictator Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990).
The Chilean Parliament approved the realization of a plebiscite by the population to pronounce on the need for a new Constitution.
