“We will increase our strategic military capabilities,” the Chinese president announced during the 20th Communist Party Congress amid tensions with the United States.
The White House’s new national security strategy considers China the “most important geopolitical challenge,” since the country has disputes in the South China and East China seas with several Asian countries.In addition, Xi Jinping pointed out that Beijing has no intention of giving up the possibility of using force against Taiwan if necessary.
He also promised that the Communist Party would put more effort in the country’s technological development and in strengthening food safety and supply channels for the industry.Xi Jinping said that China will achieve technological “self-sufficiency and power” by developing the educational system and inviting foreign experts.
This October 16 , Congress will appoint the country’s leaders for the next five years.Xi, 69, is expected to grant a third five-year term as party general secretary, which would reaffirm his strategy of imposing his dominance on the economy, society and culture after four decades of market liberalization.
The Congress will also address the country’s economic development . China’s economy has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, but national leaders continue to pursue a “zero tolerance” policy toward the coronavirus by imposing strict lockdown measures in what they see as unfavorable areas.
